On Saturday, two children were killed in a head-on crash on State Route 14 in Woodbury. Vermont State Police said the crash occurred when the driver of a southbound Toyota Corolla failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, and crashed head-on into a northbound Ford F-250 truck.

The driver suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Two children in the car, an 8-year-old and a 2-year-old, were pronounced dead at the scene. One child was in a car seat, and the other was wearing a seat belt, police said.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center. A passenger in the truck was seriously injured and also transported to UVM Medical Center. Police said the passenger was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.

The crash remains under investigation.

Head-on collisions are among the deadliest types of traffic accidents. The combined force of two vehicles traveling in opposite directions can instantly cause catastrophic damage. Even when occupants are properly restrained with seat belts or child safety seats, the severity of the impact can result in life-threatening or fatal injuries.

Drivers have little opportunity to avoid head-on crashes, particularly on two-lane roads, when a vehicle crosses the center line into oncoming traffic.
